PROVINCE BACKING THIRD CROSSING IN KINGSTON
6/14/2017 9:30:15 AM

Kingston Council met last night and will meet again this evening to discuss the third crossing, and things are looking favorable for the build following a funding announcement yesterday morning. Steven Del Duca, the Minister of Transportation joined Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala to announce the province is backing the project. The province will provide up to $60 million dollars for the Third Crossing project; which has a potential $180 million dollar price tag. The project is expected to go ahead if provincial and federal support is provided to cover two thirds of the cost. The new bridge will provide alternate routes for commuters, decrease traffic congestion along the LaSalle Causeway and provide additional access to the east end of the city for emergency vehicles. Kingston's $60 million dollar portion of the funds would see half come from development charges that the city has been collecting since 1999 specifically for the third crossing. The remaining half would come from taxpayers in the form of $15 million in cash and $15 million in debt.
