AREA-RATED POLICING LEAVES MORE QUESTIONS IN COUNCIL CHAMBERS
1/10/2018 9:29:24 AM

The issue of area-rated policing in Greater Napanee was a hot topic at Council last night. Resident John Stinson addressed council and referred back to the Taxation Committee's report from August of 2016. Stinson suggested that if policing costs are lowered for rural residents because of a higher urban policing budget, higher costs for roads, snow removal and waste services in rural areas should also be taken into consideration. Stinson added he doesn't feel the issue will be resolved until Council can provide leadership to bring residents together to help them better understand area-rating. Council carried a motion to have 3 public policy questions sent to the Minister of Finance, Minister of the Attorney General, Minister of Municipal Affairs, the Premier and circulated to other municipal stakeholders regarding area-rated policing; based on councilor Kaisers motion to seek dialogue with the OPP and Province regarding the issue. Councilors Carol Harvey and Shaune Lucas weren't in favor of the motion.
