The City of Kingston is well on their way to achieve their 2020 Climate Action Goal. The Kingston Climate Action Plan is a community-developed set of strategies that guide efforts throughout the region to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The plan's latest update shows that overall community emissions have dropped by 12% since 2011. Although on track to reach a target of 15% by 2020, the update warns additional efforts are needed to achieve a 30% reduction in overall emission levels by 2030. Figures show the use of natural gas makes up for more than half of emissions in Kingston. New initiatives include using organic materials to generate "renewable" natural gas with substantially lower emissions. The plan calls for City staff to partner with Utilities Kingston and assess how community-generated organic waste such as the green bin program and industrial waste can be used to generate RNG'S.
