A memorial wall has been added to the Mohawk Plaza on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. This is to honor the memory of the children killed at the Indian Residential Schools.
myFM spoke with Laura Wilfred, plaza CEO, about why the wall was installed.
The community are encouraged to make a donation to place a stone on the wall. All funds raised will be donated to Indspire, a charity that invests in the education of Indigenous people for the benefit of the individuals, their families and communities.
During the unveiling Tuesday morning, flyers were handed out with suggestions as to what people can do to help. Wilfred spoke with a residential school survivor as to what the community can do. An image of the nine points on the flyer will be included below.
Wilfred added they would like to offer volunteer hours to any area high school students who are in need. They are looking for volunteers to work the table at the wall, as there are three glass cases, and it will take a lot of stones to fill the wall. Students or their parents can contact Wilfred at info@mohawkplaza.com.
The goal is to continue until the three glass cases that make up the wall are filled with stones.
