During this week’s town of Greater Napanee council meeting, under notice of motion , Councillor John McCormack asked council to adopt the following resolution.
Two examples given were one cross walk painted with feathers to recognize the history of the residential school’s while supporting reconciliation, and another crosswalk painted with rainbow colours to support for the LGBTQ+ community.
McCormack mentioned other municipalities begin their meetings by recognizing the first nations land that they are on. He says however once you start it, it can be very difficult to stop. And what about other groups who may want similar recognition. Also doing this, it does not reach as large an audience per-say as a crosswalk would.
Town CAO John Pinsent had this to say after consulting with infrastructure services.
Pinsent says he’s want to look at this from an esthetics perspective in terms of what’s best for the community, and still recognizing what is if they want to do.
The discussion will be brought back up at the next council meeting, giving staff time to look into things.
