New transitional housing has been opening in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, for women and children escaping domestic violence.
In attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony was Don Maracle, Chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.
Maracle said these two tiny homes were the result of a pre-apprenticeship training program, which saw five women trained in the pre-apprentice carpentry skills. This program is for men and women, but these new homes were made by women from in our community.
During the ceremony, Councillor Chris Maracle said this is just the beginning. In the coming days and weeks they will be asking chief and council for approval of the very first first nation net zero tiny house village.
myFM spoke with Tamrin Martin, who joined the pre-apprenticeship program in January, about what it means to be a woman in this program, helping with these homes for women in the community.
Each home is fitted with an open living, dinning and kitchen area, with a hall leading to two bedrooms, a bathroom, and storage spaces with a laundry washer and dryer on site.
