The federal government has now released their budget for 2022.
Following the announcement of the budget, we had a chance to speak with Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman, who just experience her first Federal Budget in office. She says it was interesting but also described it as disappointing.
Audio PlayerKramp-Neuman says she believes their intent was good, but her concern is that over the last six months, there has been a tremendous amount of feeling of hopelessness from the people of H-L&A, and she thinks Canadians were looking for a break today but didn’t get one.
When asked what aspects she didn’t like, she noted there were several. She began with acknowledging that many Canadians are struggling, and that instead of spending more and getting less, she says she knows Canadians are looking for some kind of hope, and she found that it was an irresponsible budget.
Audio PlayerShe noted that at the time she had only about an hour and a half to really digest the 300 page document, but she said she’ll really be focusing on how the people of H-L&A, rural Canadians, young families and seniors are benefiting.
When asked if there was anything she would have liked to have seen done differently, Kramp-Neuman says that as the opposition their role is to keep the government between the rails, and they need to push for fiscal accountability, fiscal responsibility and to keep in mind that this budget is merely a communications document.
Kramp-Neuman says what she’ll be are the supplementary estimates that will be tabled later in the year. She says that is where we’ll see if they’re committed to these numbers presented today.
She then told us of something she would have liked to see more of.
Audio PlayerShe then noted several different areas including additional funding in defense, housing and to fight the inflation. Kramp-Neuman says they were also looking for more tax breaks for Canadians.
Kramp-Neuman had this message to share with the community.
