As part of its 2023 operating budget, the Town of Greater Napanee intends to increase some of the service fees within Garbage, including bag tags.
myFM spoke with Napanee Mayor Terry Richardson, who says it was in the plan ultimately to raise the price of tags over a number of years.
Richardson says they are hoping the process they are instituting in regard to the bag tags will work.
The price for Bag Tags is to go up from the current $3 to $4.
Other increases include:
- The fee for additional bags of domestic waste delivered to the waste disposal site to be increased from $5.00 or a bag tag, plus $2.00 to be $6.00 or a bag tag, plus $2.00
- The fee for residential bulky waste to be increased from $0.40/cubic foot with a minimum charge of $12.00 to be $0.45/cubic foot with a minimum charge of $15.00
Council also intends to pass a by-law to issue a special tax levy on each property that is eligible to receive curbside garbage collection, pro-rated for half of the year for 2023. As part of this change, each property will be levied the equivalent of $4 per tag for 25 weeks on their property taxes. Each property that is levied the $100.00 waste collection fee will have 25 bag tags mailed to them, with the intention of covering the period from June 1 to December 31. Any additional tags required can be purchased at the increased rate of $4.00 per tag.
Council will consider the proposed by-law at their meeting Tuesday, April 25.
