Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce isn’t ruling out implementing legislation which would require schools to inform parents if their child chooses to use a different pronoun at school.
Lecce was asked if Ontario would follow behind Saskatchewan and New Brunswick in adopting a gender and pronoun policy, which legislates parental consent for students under the age of 16 that want to change their given names and pronouns in school.
Lecce says parents have the right to know what’s going on with their child at school.
The legislation has drawn criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates, who say some students may feel safer at school than at home to be themselves.
When asked about those children in that scenario, Lecce said faculty are trained to identify danger.
Lecce said safety is the top priority for all children.
