A 73-hectare property with old-growth forests, karst, and wetlands along the Moira River, north of Belleville, is now protected.
The late Clifford and Heather Maclean dreamed of preserving this land and first contacted the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in 2008. Thanks to their dedication, collaboration, and support from donors and partners, NCC acquired the property.
The Moira River Karst nature reserve features diverse habitats, including forests, meadows, and wetlands that support threatened bird species and filter water for downstream communities. This project was supported by private donors, the Government of Canada, and the Government of Ontario.
The NCC continues to accelerate conservation efforts across Canada, protecting over 1 million hectares in the past two years. Protecting nature is essential for addressing biodiversity loss and climate change.
