Bay of Quinte MPP and Minister of Education Todd Smith has resigned “effective immediately” and is moving into a position in the private sector.
In a statement shared to social media, Smith says he informed Premier Doug Ford that he is stepping down from his seat and cabinet duties immediately.
Smith, who served as Ontario’s energy minister for three years before becoming education minister in June, recently introduced a new funding formula to cap childcare fees at $22 per day starting in January.
Smith thanked Premier Ford for the opportunity to serve in his cabinet for over six years and acknowledged the challenges of political life. He also expressed gratitude to his family for their support throughout his career.
Smith has been an MPP since 2011, and his resignation comes just weeks before the new school year begins.
Premier Ford praised Smith’s achievements, particularly in energy policy, and wished him well in his new career.
Just before 4pm this afternoon, Premier Doug Ford named Jill Dunlop as the new Minister of Education and Nolan Quinn as the new Minister of Colleges and Universities, replacing Dunlop.
MPP Smith’s office says there will be more news on a by election for the riding in the coming days.
