UPDATE 12:16pm: myFM has received confirmation from the Town of Greater Napanee that the area has been cleared. The evacuation and shelter in place are now over.
When asked why students were not evacuated, though residents in the area were evacuated, the Limestone District School Board share with myFM that as directed by OPP and the Fire Department, there was no need to evacuate at any point in time. “Students were kept inside until officials were able to provide updates and fix the problem. The schools continued to operate as normal inside with learning continuing.”

UPDATE 11:22am: The Town of Greater Napanee has shared an alert that a gas leak has occurred in the area of Graham Street and Belleville Road.
Evacuation has taken place within 100m of the leak. Residents and schools in this area have been asked to shelter in place as a precaution.
Emergency Services are on the scene with the local provider to address the source of the leak.
Roads in the surrounding area will be closed until further notice.
All residents are advised to avoid the area for their safety and to allow for Emergency Services to rectify the leak.

Original Article 10:36am: Napanee District Secondary School (NDSS) and The Prince Charles School (TPCS) were both placed on a hold and secure this morning due to the smell of gas in the area.
The Greater Napanee Fire Department responded just before 9am today and initiated the hold and secure at both schools. Shortly after 10am, Enbridge Gas had arrived on scene to aid in the investigation.
Greater Napanee Deputy Fire Chief James Feeney told myFM on the scene that there is no risk to public safety.
