Andrew J. Thompson, accused in the deadly August 3, 2024, fire at 159 John Street, Napanee, appeared via video before Justice of the Peace Deanne Chapelle on Friday, November 15, 2024. The fire claimed the life of 67-year-old Walter Lasher.
Thompson now faces updated charges, including first-degree and second-degree murder (as alternatives), arson with disregard for human life, and three counts of arson causing property damage. Previous charges were withdrawn and replaced with these updates.
Thompson’s defence lawyer, Peter Zaduk, was absent from the proceedings. The case will return to case management court later this month, giving Thompson and his lawyer time to review the updates.
The updated charges represent a significant step forward in the legal process as Thompson remains in custody at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay.
