The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is advising pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their furry friends safe around lakes and rivers this winter. With unpredictable ice conditions, pets are at risk of falling through or getting into dangerous situations near water.
The organization recommends keeping pets on a leash when walking near bodies of water and supervising them outdoors, especially in icy areas. It’s important to avoid areas with thawed or slushy ice and to check ice thickness before venturing out. Pet owners should also be aware of local hazards like fast-flowing water or slippery banks.
Jennifer Bluhm, Vice President of Community Outreach Services, emphasizes that even well-trained pets can be drawn to unsafe ice. Carrying a phone for emergency access is also advised in case of accidents.
