Greater Napanee is calling on the Ontario government to ease the financial burden of policing the Quinte Detention Centre.
At their council meeting this week, CAO Matthew Grant revealed that about 200 police calls are made to the provincial facility each year. And while the OPP weren’t able to share a total breakdown of calls, they did give provide a breakdown for the most expensive calls.
That number is expected to increase with a 23% increase of the Quinte Detention Center’s capacity.
At the time that town staff were asked to research this, they requested a delegation to the the upcoming Rural Ontario Municipalities Association (ROMA) conference, to meet with the solicitor general of Ontario and the minister of finance of Ontario. Grant shared they did receive a delegation with the solicitor general’s office at the conference taking place Sunday, January 19 – Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
The specific items they’ll be highlighting is 1, to acknowledge the relief that the provincial government has provided to municipalities on this year’s OPP bill, as well to acknowledge that the solicitor general of Ontario’s office indicated that they will be doing a full review, on the OPP billing model for municipalities.
Council received the report of the OPP billing costs at the Quinte Detention Centre and a motion to attend the delegation was passed unanimously.
