Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health with the South East Health Unit, and Dana Douglas, Registered Dietitian, are encouraging residents to set realistic New Year’s resolutions.
Dr. Li advises focusing on positive, flexible goals, such as eating more vegetables instead of rigid, avoidance-based resolutions like cutting out chips entirely. She says this approach helps people stay motivated and adjust if they slip up.
Douglas highlights the importance of a healthy relationship with food. She cautions against red flags like labeling foods as “good” or “bad” and recommends striving for food neutrality.
For exercise goals, Dr. Li suggests emphasizing benefits like mental health and independence rather than appearance.
She recommends breaking resolutions into smaller, achievable steps and celebrating progress.
Both experts stress grace and flexibility, making resolutions an opportunity for lifelong change.
