Heading south for the winter or off to a ski resort? Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding residents to secure their homes before they go.
Officers in East Region say thieves often target empty homes, but simple precautions can help. Avoid announcing travel plans on social media, and don’t post vacation photos while away. Arrange for someone to shovel snow, collect mail, and put out garbage to make the house look occupied.
Using timers for lights, locking all doors and windows, and installing motion-sensor exterior lights can also deter break-ins. Neighbours can help by parking in your driveway and keeping an eye on your home.
OPP also recommend checking alarms, securing valuables, and reviewing home insurance policies.
Taking these steps can help ensure a worry-free trip and prevent unwelcome surprises when you return.
