We continue our profiles of the local candidates running in the Provincial election.
Hastings-Lennox and Addington Green Party Candidate Mike Holbrook moved to Marmora in 2006 and fell in love with the area. A veteran of the construction industry, Holbrook calls himself a “Blue-collar Green.” He has worked on sites across Canada, run his own businesses, and now imports low-impact construction equipment.
When asked about the top issues he’s seeing in the riding, he began by noting the top issue in general has to do with the state of our democracy. As an “environment guy,” he also cares about those things very much.
Looking to how he and his party will fix those issues, Holbrook said a lot of it comes down to “getting away from relying on the big financial interest to do the work for us.” He went on the say the trickle-down idea is not doing the job.
A potential trade war and tariffs imposed by the United States is a fear for many. In answering how they would protect local businesses, Holbrook commented that we’ve put ourselves in this situation where we’re very dependent on the north-south trade. “Similar to the pandemic, the government may have to step in to keep things stable for people.”
Election Day is February 27th.
