Wednesday marks Pink Shirt Day, a time to raise awareness about the impact of bullying on children and youth. Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health for South East Health Unit, and Emily Castle, public health nurse, have some tips to help parents and caregivers.
Dr. Li says bullying affects social health, which is just as crucial as physical health.
She adds that for children and teens, healthy relationships with family and friends are vital to their well-being.
Castle says parents should watch for signs like low self-esteem, anxiety, or changes in academic performance. She encourages parents to listen to their children and seek support if needed.
If bullying occurs, parents should act fast by speaking with adults in charge and monitoring the situation. Castle also says it’s vital for parent and adults to be positive role models.
