Cataraqui Conservation has issued a water safety statement as rising temperatures and rainfall are expected to increase water levels and flows in the region’s lakes and streams.
Warmer temperatures above 10°C are forecast from March 13-16, along with 10-20mm or more of rain. Snowmelt has already begun, and runoff is causing water to pool in low-lying areas. While normal spring peak water levels are expected, heavy rainfall could lead to higher-than-usual levels in some areas.
Residents are urged to stay away from fast-moving water, dam areas, and melting ice. Ice conditions remain unpredictable and dangerous. While widespread flooding is not expected, localized flooding and ice jams could occur.
Cataraqui Conservation continues to monitor conditions and will provide updates as needed. The public is encouraged to report flooding to their local municipality. The water safety statement remains in effect until March 26.
