A lengthy investigation into allegations of sexual assault on an infant by a grandfather has led to an arrest, say Belleville police.
According to the Belleville Police Service, in December 2022, members of the criminal investigation division launched an investigation into the allegations of sexual assault on a one-month-old infant by a grandfather.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, police said an arrest warrant was issued for a 61-year-old man from Mississauga. The accused was charged with sexual assault on a person under 16, assault, sexual interference, and bestiality.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused allegedly fled the country prior to his arrest, said police, on Monday, March 17, 2025.
On Sunday, March 16, 2025, police said security at the Montreal Airport contacted the Belleville Police Service advising that the accused had been arrested while re-entering the country.
With help from the Sûreté du Québec, the accused was transported back to Belleville where he was held for a bail hearing, reported police, on Monday.
Police said they will not be releasing the name of the accused to protect the identity of the victim and family.
No other details were released by police.
