The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has confirmed the death of an inmate at Bath Institution, and the passing on an inmate at Millhaven Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre.
CSC reported that 84-year-old Dennis Uhrig died in custody at Bath Institution on March 23 of apparent natural causes. Uhrig had been serving an indeterminate sentence since December 12, 2007.
A day later, CSC reported that 69-year-old Everton Biddersingh died in custody at Millhaven Institution on March 21 of apparent natural causes. Biddersingh had been serving an indeterminate sentence since February 8, 2016.
According to court documents, Uhrig was convicted of first-degree murder in the Kitchener-Waterloo region in 2007. At the time, media reports indicated he lived in Burlington. His 2012 appeal was dismissed.
According to an article by the CBC, Biddersingh was convicted in 2016 of first-degree murder in the death of his teenage daughter in 1994.
CSC said both inmates next of kin have been notified. As required by policy, police and the coroner have also been informed.
CSC will conduct a review into the circumstances of his death, which is standard procedure for all inmate deaths in custody. No further details have been released at this time.
