A major ice storm is set to impact southern Ontario this weekend, with a freezing rain warning in effect for Greater Napanee, Lennox and Addington County, and surrounding areas. The storm is expected to bring significant ice build-up, with general accumulations of 5 to 15 millimetres, and potentially over 20 millimetres in some areas.
The freezing rain will begin Friday evening, lasting until Sunday afternoon. Conditions are expected to be icy and slippery, leading to widespread power outages and dangerous travel. While some areas may see a brief break in the freezing rain on Saturday, others could experience more continuous precipitation.
Those near Lake Ontario may see lighter ice accumulation if temperatures rise, causing rain instead. The ice could lead to tree branches breaking, adding to the hazards.
Residents are urged to take extra care when walking or driving and consider delaying non-essential travel. An emergency kit is recommended, including water, food, medicine, and a flashlight.
