A major ice storm is battering Greater Napanee this morning, bringing dangerous conditions and widespread power outages.
Environment Canada reports ice accretion of 10 to 20 mm, with some areas possibly exceeding 25 mm. Ice build-up is making roads and sidewalks extremely slippery and may cause tree branches and power lines to snap.
The freezing rain is expected to transition to rain later this morning as temperatures rise above zero. Until then, residents should avoid non-essential travel and use extreme caution outdoors.
Public Safety Canada urges residents to prepare for potential extended outages by having an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight. More information on emergency preparedness is available at getprepared.gc.ca.
Authorities recommend staying indoors and reporting downed power lines to local utilities.
