Napanee’s Jeannie Hunter, a music teacher at Nepean High School, was awarded the 2025 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award at the Juno Awards on Sunday. Hunter, a graduate of Napanee District Secondary School, was recognized for her 30 years of work in music education.
She has dedicated her career to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom. Hunter was the founding director of Brookfield High School’s “World Voices Choir” and has guided students to national accolades, including “Canada’s Greatest Music Class” in 2015.
Hunter’s commitment to music education has inspired students across Canada, and she credits her high school music program for sparking her passion for teaching.
Along with the award, she received a $10,000 prize, a Juno statuette, and funding for her school’s music program. Hunter accepted the award on behalf of all music teachers, stressing music’s power to unite and bring positive change.
