The Prince Edward County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging residents to exercise caution when buying or selling items on social media. Several incidents have been reported where fraudsters have compromised social media accounts, posting fake items for sale and requesting deposits via e-transfer from victims.
These scammers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, making it easier for people of all ages to fall victim. The OPP is advising the public to protect their accounts by creating strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and only logging into social media accounts from trusted sources. Additionally, personal information should never be shared over social media.
The OPP encourages everyone to stay vigilant and share these tips with friends and family, especially those who may be at higher risk. For more information or to report fraud, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or contact local police at 1-888-310-1122.
