The Town of Greater Napanee is one of the many Ontario municipalities proposed to receive strong mayor powers from the province, effective May 1, 2025.
The move is part of a plan by the provincial government to help local leaders remove barriers to housing and infrastructure development. These new powers will allow Greater Napanee’s mayor to directly support projects tied to new housing, roads, and public transit.
Mayor Terry Richardson says the town is ready to take on this new responsibility and is committed to working with the province to ease the housing crisis.
A full report will be brought to council outlining what these powers include and how the municipality will move forward.
Strong mayor powers are designed to speed up approvals and align local efforts with the province’s housing goals. Napanee’s leadership says the change is one piece of the puzzle toward building more homes in the community.
