The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared Ontario Provincial Police officers in connection with a man’s injury during an arrest in Bath last December.
On the night of December 13, 2024, officers at a RIDE checkpoint saw a vehicle reverse away. They followed it to an apartment building. When they approached the 20-year-old driver in the front foyer, he failed a breath test and was arrested for impaired driving.
While officers escorted him to a cruiser, the man resisted and appeared to misstep, possibly rolling his ankle. He was eventually secured in the cruiser and taken to the station.
Two days later, the man went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a non-displaced ankle fracture.
After reviewing the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino said there was no reason to believe officers committed a crime. The case is now closed and no charges will be laid.
