A CN freight train has derailed in Kingston. It happened just after 11 a.m. on Bath Road near Queen Mary Road. Some people were being evacuated from the area around 12 p.m. Police have since asked anyone living in the general vicinity to stay inside their home until further notice. They are also asking for the public, both on foot and in vehicles, to stay out of the area of the derailment. The City’s environmental services team is monitoring the situation, as is CN. Queen Mary Road was temporarily closed but has been reopened. There were no injuries and there is no danger to public safety or the environment as the minimal amount of product which was spilled from one railcar is contained to CN’s property and did not contaminate any source of water. The product, Adipic Acid, is a solid industrial product commonly used in food and to make everyday household items such as nylon.
Officials say Bath Road is expected to remain closed for the remainder of today, and possibly into tomorrow.
CN crews are currently investigating the cause of the derailment.
