Crews are now back at the station and the fire is out following an explosion heard at Napanee Scrap Metal & Auto Ltd.
myFM spoke with Deputy Chief Bill Hammond who says an explosion was heard at approximately 1:16pm August 17, 2021. Crews were alerted by the explosion and were on scene before receiving any 911 calls.
Upon arrival there were several locations on fire in the scrap yard. One pile that contained a car that had been unloaded out of a recycling haul trailer, the trailer itself was on fire and then the subsequent yard beside it was on fire. Hammond says crews made a quick knock down at the car and then concentrated their efforts on the fire not spreading to Manco Recycling, an adjacent property behind it.
Hammond says there were no injuries. There were six staff on location, who were unloading the one over the road car, a 53 foot scrap hauler, when the explosion took place.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
