After a first full week back to work and school following the holidays, a lot of germs are being spread. Respiratory illness like COVID, the Flu and RSV are on the rise.
myFM spoke with KFL&A Medical Officer of Health Dr. Piotr Oglaza, who told us historically the holiday season is the peak of respiratory activity, which is being reflected on recent conditions.
Oglaza says they ‘Stay Safe’ message is very intuitive to individuals and probably the best way to protect both yourself and loved ones.
Another key message public health would like to share is that what may seem like just a cold for you, may be much worse for someone else.
And it’s important to be honest with yourself about your symptoms and stay away from others when sick.
To stay safe and health, the doctor encourages us to practice good hand hygiene, optimizing indoor air quality, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Another way is getting vaccinated if you haven’t already.
Though Public Health encourages everyone to get vaccinated before cold and flu season, there’s still a point of getting the vaccine while activity is high.
