Tyendinaga Police Service went to social media Saturday afternoon to say their “hearts are broken.”
They report missing 38-year-old Michelle Kunkel, last seen January 9th in Shannonville, has been located, “but it was an outcome no one wanted.”
“The Tyendinaga Police would like to thank all those that assisted over the past month. A sincere thank you to over 120 community volunteers that donated their own time and their own equipment to help search and bring food,” they said. “A big thank you to over 30 Ontario Provincial Police officers that were assisting in investigating, searching, flight crews, K9, and search boats. Thanks to the media outlets that broadcast the story and those that shared it through social media, it will be forever appreciated.”
The OPP shared Monday morning that divers with the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located Michelle’s body on February 10, 2024, under the ice in a waterway near the intersection of Highway 2 and York Road in Shannonville, in the area where she had last been seen.
While the investigation remains ongoing, there is no indication foul play was involved.
Police say no further details are going to be released at this time.
