It’s been just over 3 weeks now since work began to re-paint the exterior of Greater Napanee’s town hall, and it’s looking great!
Compared to last week, you can now see more of the copper colour on the east and south sides of the building. The west side of the building, facing Centre Street, still shows the different layers of paint this process involves. You can hear our conversation with the painters here.
For this week’s look back into the building’s history, we discovered that not everyone has been a fan of this building. In November 1969, Town Council learned that their $5,000 bid for the old post office at John and Bridge was rejected by the Crown Assets Disposal Corp. Some council members wanted to buy the post office for a new town hall and police station, while two councillors thought it would be cheaper to demolish the existing town hall and build a new one. Councillor Clarence A. Milligan called the town’s offer “ridiculously low” and insisted that the council should try harder to acquire the building, as it would be a suitable new location for the town hall.
