The OPP issued over 8,100 traffic charges during Operation Safe Driver Week. Both non-commercial and commercial drivers faced penalties for unsafe actions and behaviors.
Commercial drivers received more than 1,000 Highway Traffic Act offences, while non-commercial drivers were responsible for the rest. Offences included speeding, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, unsecured loads, and defective commercial vehicle equipment.
These charges highlight the risks of unsafe driving around large commercial vehicles. As of July 2024, nearly 500 of the over 4,000 commercial vehicle-involved collisions on OPP-patrolled roads have resulted in fatalities or injuries.
The OPP reminds motorists that most collisions can be prevented if all drivers commit to sharing the road safely.
Operation Safe Driver Week, founded by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, ran from July 7 to 14, 2024. This annual campaign aims to promote safer driving habits and reduce road incidents.
