The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded their investigation after a man was injured during his arrest in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
On May 5, 2024, officers from the Tyendinaga Police Service (TPS) and an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer responded to a call in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. A resident requested police assistance to remove a 24-year-old man from their home. The man had allegedly threatened the resident and was not supposed to be there due to a prior legal undertaking.
The situation escalated in the basement of the home, where officers handcuffed the man and placed him in a police cruiser. Later, at the hospital, the man was found to have several facial fractures.
After reviewing the incident, SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded that there were no reasonable grounds to charge the OPP officer involved with any criminal offense related to the arrest or the man’s injuries. The case is now considered closed.
