As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is urging individuals to schedule a breast screening exam. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Early detection is key, according to Dr. Eric Sauerbrei, Medical Director at KHSC’s Breast Imaging Kingston (BIK) site, who notes that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
Ontario recently expanded breast screening eligibility, allowing individuals as young as 40 to self-refer for exams through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP). This move aims to increase early detection and improve outcomes. KHSC’s BIK site offers comprehensive screening services, including mammography, in a comfortable setting using advanced technology.
Individuals aged 40-74 can book a mammogram directly without a referral, while those at higher risk (ages 30-69) should consult a physician. BIK, located at 820 John Marks Avenue, provides state-of-the-art breast imaging services, with Breast MRI capabilities to be added soon.
