A new pedestrian crossover has been installed at Graham and Centre Street in Greater Napanee, and drivers who fail to stop could face fines of up to $1,000 and four demerit points.
Unlike regular intersections, vehicles and cyclists must stop and wait until pedestrians have fully crossed before proceeding. Many drivers may be unfamiliar with pedestrian crossovers, as there are only three in the county.
The crossover features pedestrian signs, pavement markings, and rapid-flashing beacons activated by a pushbutton. Due to cold weather, pavement markings, including pedestrian stripes and “shark teeth” yield markings, will be completed in the spring.
Pedestrians must press the button, ensure vehicles have stopped, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Drivers and cyclists must remain alert, especially for children in the area.
Officials are reminding road users to follow the rules to avoid costly penalties and keep pedestrians safe.
