Premier Doug Ford has confirmed he will call an early Ontario election next Wednesday, saying the province needs a strong mandate to fight against potential tariffs from Donald Trump.
Speaking at a press conference in Brampton, Ford announced he will meet with the lieutenant governor on Tuesday to formalize the election call. He warned that Trump’s trade policies could hurt Ontario families, businesses, and communities.
Ford said the province is ready to spend “tens of billions of dollars” to protect the economy, comparing the situation to pandemic-era financial measures.
With the election now set in motion, Ontario voters will soon head to the polls to decide whether to back Ford’s plan or support the opposition’s stance that an early vote is unnecessary.
