During their meeting this week, Greater Napanee Town Council approved the draft plan for the Springside Meadows subdivision, despite several public concerns about the development’s impact on traffic, neighbourhood character, and live-work units. The development, set for 415 and 427 Bridge Street West, will feature a mix of residential homes and small-scale commercial units.
During the meeting, Council addressed concerns raised by residents regarding the proposed live-work units. Some feared these units could introduce unwanted retail businesses, potentially increasing traffic and affecting the area’s streetscape. Michael Nobes, General Manager of Growth & Infrastructure, assured Council that the units would be small-scale businesses, designed to limit noise, odour, and traffic impacts. He also confirmed that cannabis retail stores would not be specifically excluded, as Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission regulates such businesses.
Traffic concerns were also discussed, particularly the potential impact on Bridge Street. However, traffic studies for both the Springside Meadows and Westbridge Estates Phase 12 developments showed that road layouts and volumes were suitable. Council also noted that traffic calming measures, such as a future roundabout, would help manage congestion.
Despite opposition from two councillors, the proposal was ultimately approved, with Council welcoming ongoing public feedback as the development progresses.
